Art Has No Age Limit
Columbus Celebrates Creativity Across Generations
For the past two weeks, the Columbus Public Library and the Columbus Senior Center have been filled with creativity, color, conversation and connection thanks to two inspiring artist residencies led by Omaha artist Kim Darling. Supported through the Nebraska Arts Council's Artist in Schools/Communities Grant Program and the Creative Aging Arts Grant Program, the residencies gave both senior citizens and students in grades 5-12 the opportunity to explore art in meaningful and collaborative ways.
A Workshop Designed to Bring People Together
The "Elements of Art" workshop invited participants to create artwork focused on personal and community voice while exploring painting, color theory, and collaborative design. The residency was intentionally designed to be welcoming for all experience levels encouraging experimentation, creativity, and confidence building through accessible art activities.
At the library, tweens and teens gathered in the Creativity Corner to learn new artistic techniques, create original pieces and connect with others through creativity. Even those who had never tried art before discovered that they belonged in the creative process.
At the same time, senior participants at the Columbus Senior Center embraced the opportunity to explore new forms of expression, learning about the color wheel, mixing colors and discovering the job of creating something uniquely their own.
Creativity Without Fear
One of the most inspiring parts of the residency was seeing participants push beyond their comfort zones. Some walked into the workshops unsure of their artistic ability, while others used the opportunity to challenge themselves creatively in new ways.
By the end of the two weeks, everyone had given themselves permission to explore.
The workshops became more than just art classes. They became spaces for encouragement, self-expression and personal growth. Stories shared during the final reception reflected how meaningful these experiences had become for many participants.
Friendships were formed, confidence grew and creativity opened doors for connection across generations.
On Canvas, Many Voices
One of the most powerful moments of the residency came during the collaborative art-making process, when seniors and teenagers worked on a large shared canvas.
Watching multiple generations contribute to one collective artwork was a reminder art truly connects people of all ages. Each participant brought their own perspective, style and energy, creating a final piece that reflected not only creativity, but community itself.
The collaborative artwork has a permanent home at the Columbus Senior Center.
Celebrating the Final Showcase
The residencies concluded with a special community art reception showcasing the work created throughout the workshops, Families, friends, and community members gathered to celebrate the artists and experience the creativity that had filled the past two weeks.
Guests viewing the exhibit also enjoyed cookies from Regina's Kitchen, adding another local touch to an already meaningful afternoon.
The artwork remained on display at the library following the reception, allowing even more community members to experience the creativity and talent shared throughout the residencies.
Building Community Through Art
According to the grant proposal, the residency focused on strengthening community bonds through collaborative public art experiences and creating opportunities for intergenerational learning and creative empowerment.
The success of the workshops proved just how impactful those goals can be.
The Trax Creative District and the Columbus Public Library are grateful to Kim Darling for spending two weeks in Columbus, meeting local artists, sharing her talents and inspiring so many community members along the way.
Special thanks also go to the Nebraska Arts Council, which receives support from the State of Nebraska and the National Endowment for the Arts, along with the Trax Creative District and the Columbus Public Library for making these residencies possible.
Columbus is Ready for More Art
If the past two weeks showed anything, it is that Columbus is ready for more art.
From first-time artists to lifelong creatives, participants discovered art has the power to inspire confidence, spark conversations and bring people together in meaningful ways. The energy surrounding the residencies demonstrated how important accessible creative opportunities are for building stronger, more connected communities.
Art has no age limit and in Columbus, creativity continues to bring generations together.
