Preserving Memory Through Art: Meet Graciela DeAnda

DeAnda credits her parents with shaping her strong work ethic. Growing up, she witnessed the sacrifices they made to provide their family with greater opportunities. Her father often worked long hours, sometimes missing important family moments, while her mother carried the responsibility of holding the family together. Through their example, DeAnda learned the meaning of commitment, perseverance, and responsibility. Her mother also influenced her creative journey in an unexpected way. A few years ago, DeAnda discovered that her mother had once been a photographer. She had kept her analog camera along with boxes of undeveloped film documenting family gatherings and moments from everyday life. That discovery helped DeAnda recognize photography as more than a method of creating images—it can also be an act of love, patience, and preservation. Because of her parents, DeAnda approaches her artistic practice with a deep sense of purpose. Her work is not only connected to her personal goals but also to honoring the sacrifices that made those opportunities possible. “My work ethic is not just about productivity,” she explains. “It is about dedication, empathy, and honoring where I come from.”

DeAnda’s work centers on storytelling within migrant communities in Minneapolis while remaining connected to her family history. Her process begins by listening to people’s stories and learning about the objects and memories meaningful to them. She views participants as collaborators who help decide how their experiences are represented, keeping each project personal and respectful. Combining traditional and digital photography with textiles, wood, sound, scent, and everyday objects, DeAnda creates immersive installations that invite viewers to slow down and connect deeply with the stories being shared.

At the heart of DeAnda’s practice is a belief in art’s ability to create empathy and connection. Although her stories are personal, they reflect broader experiences of migration, identity, home, and belonging. Through immersive projects combining photography, storytelling, and sensory elements, she creates spaces where people feel seen and are encouraged to reflect on their own histories. Her goal is to preserve meaningful stories, honor everyday life, and celebrate the resilience and beauty of communities too often overlooked. Her work reminds us that memories can live in photographs, familiar objects, sounds, scents, and stories—and that art can help carry those memories forward.
