Business Spotlight: The Picket Fence Cafe
A Local Favorite Rooted in Tradition
The Picket Fence Cafe isn't just a restaurant - it's a legacy of comfort, community and good food that has stood the test of time in Columbus. With a history dating back to the 1930s or 40s, this charming cafe continues to serve up memorable meals and warm hospitality to generations of locals and visitors alike.
From the Little Gem to the Picket Fence
Originally known as The Little Gem Cafe, the business operated at 2816 12th Street for decades before relocating to its current home at 2714 13th Street in September 1990. Just a few months after the move, the cafe faced a major setback when a fire broke out on Veterans Day 1990. With incredible support from friends and members of the Church of Christ, the cafe reopened by March 1991 -- this time under a new name: The Picket Fence Cafe.
A New Chapter Begins
The cafe has changed hands several times over the years, with each new owner adding their unique touch. In July 2017, the current owner, Stephanie and Andrew Caranci, stepped in with a deep love for the restaurant industry and a strong commitment to Columbus. "I believe people are happiest when they are enjoying good, quality food," they shared. "I wanted to build up the community I grew up in and raise my family here."
Award-Winning Breakfast and Lunch
Today, The Picket Fence Cafe is a full service restaurant specializing in breakfast and lunch. Known for its cozy, welcoming atmosphere, the cafe has earned the Best of Breakfast title in Columbus for 2018, 2019, 2020, 2023 and 2024.
Customers favorites include: Breakfast Burrito, Southwest Chicken Skillet, French Toast, Turkey Spinach Artichoke Melt, Monte Cristo, Smokehouse Burger, and a wide variety of homemade pies.
And don't forget their Chicken Fried Steak Breakfast -- a hearty, local favorite that keeps regulars coming back.
Deep Roots in the Community
The Picket Fence Cafe proudly supports local causes and organizations. They've sponsored the Columbus Outlaws for eight years, supported veteran's causes, donated to schools, and participated in SCRIP programs with local private schools. They also honor Blue Pride Cards, adding extra value for local shoppers.
A Downtown Staple
Opening daily at 6 a.m., The Picket Fence Cafe brings early morning energy to downtown Columbus, They regularly participate in community events like Columbus Days and car shows, and they continue to collaborate with fellow businesses to strengthen the downtown experience. While they miss past traditions like the Christmas Stroll, they're excited to see new ideas -- like food trucks -- bringing fresh energy to the area.
A Cafe Full of Character
The building itself is full of charm. In 2020, a time capsule was discovered in the wall. The front counter was handcrafted locally from a refurbished barn, and the walls feature photography from a local artist, giving the space a sense of both history and heart.
Whether you're a longtime regular or a first-time visitor, The Picket Fence Cafe welcomes you with open arms and a warm plate. It's more than a cafe -- it's a cornerstone of the Columbus community.
