Business Spotlight: Alternative Hearing -- Serving Columbus Since 2003

Last Updated 5/23/2025Posted in Business Spotlight

The Trackside District is home to many dedicated, locally owned businesses that provide valuable services to the community. One such business, Alternative Hearing, has been helping people improve their quality of life through better hearing for more than 20 years.

After being let go from a previous job in August 2003, Kimberly Oberg, owner of Alternative Hearing, opened her own practice just a few months later in November of that same year. With support and encouragement from loyal clients, she turned a challenging moment into an opportunity to provide hearing care in a way that is deeply personal and compassionate.

As someone with hearing loss herself, she understands the daily challenges of communication. That lived experience is what drives her mission—not only to provide access to quality hearing aids and assistive technology, but also to educate people about effective communication habits and what to expect throughout their hearing care journey.

Full Range of Services

Alternative Hearing offers a full range of services, including:

  • Comprehensive hearing evaluations

  • Hearing aid fittings, repairs, and ongoing maintenance

  • A wide variety of hearing aid styles and technologies to meet different budgets and lifestyles

As an approved vendor for the Nebraska Public Service Commission, the business also helps individuals access specialized phones and other equipment designed to make daily life more connected and manageable.

Future plans for Alternative Hearing focus on expanding educational efforts around communication strategies—helping individuals and their families connect more easily and confidently.
