Keeping Tatanka Home: A Community Effort to Preserve Our Buffalo Bench

Last Updated 11/13/2024

A Warm Welcome in Frankfort Square

When Tatanka arrived in Frankfort Square back in April as part of the Trax Creative District Sculpture Walk, he quickly became a beloved figure. This striking buffalo sculpture, a bench in the shape of a proud bison, was crafted by Nebraska artist Carl Weiss of Springfield, who put his heart into every detail. His vision was to celebrate the strength and spirit of our region, and it’s safe to say that Tatanka has done just that—he’s brought a unique charm to the square, and people of all ages have enjoyed his presence.

From Sculpture to Community Icon

Over the months, Tatanka became more than just a sculpture. He’s become part of our community, a landmark that children climb on, families take photos with, and passersby admire. He’s added a distinct local flavor to Frankfort Square, reminding everyone who visits that art is alive here in Columbus.

A Growing Wish for Tatanka to Stay

Recently, there’s been a growing desire to keep Tatanka here permanently. The idea of him leaving feels almost unthinkable. But for Tatanka to stay, he must be purchased from Carl for $6,800—a cost that will allow him to remain a fixture in Frankfort Square for years to come. This is where the community has a chance to come together to make it happen.

Together, We Can Make it Happen

Through the Columbus Parks Foundation, donations are being collected to help make this dream a reality. Supporting this project means more than just funding a sculpture; it’s a way to uplift a local artist and keep our community vibrant and unique.

With each dollar contributed, we move closer to ensuring that Tatanka, our buffalo, stays home in Columbus for good.
