Business Spotlight: Center for Survivors
A Safe Space Built on Strength and Compassion
For over 25 years, the Center for Survivors has been a beacon of home in downtown Columbus. Founded by Jamie Snyder, Rosemarie Heinisch, and Linda Cattau, the organization began as a volunteer effort in a small house, evolving into a dynamic nonprofit serving six counties in Nebraska. Today it stands as a vital resource offering 24/7 crisis advocacy, legal and medical support, emergency shelter, prevention education and peer-led outreach programs.
How It All Began
The Center's roots trace back to 1978 when Nebraska passed legislation supporting services for victims of domestic violence. Jamie Snyder, then a therapist at Lutheran Family Services, helped secure the initial funding to bring those services to Columbus. By 1990, the Center for Sexual Assault and Domestic Violence Survivors was officially born, standing alone with a focused mission to support and empower surviviors.
What They Offer
Community Connections That Make a Difference
The Center plays a visible role in the community year-round whether it's painting the town purple during Domestic Violence Awareness Month, organizing Denim Day, or partnering with downtown businesses for Shop for Survivors. Revolution, their teen peer-advocacy group, brings energy and education to schools, events, and public spaces through engaging conversations and creative outreach.
Always Moving Forward
From its origins in a small home to its current place in the Trackside District, the Center for Survivors has grown with Columbus. Future goals focus on expanding bystander invention strategies, enhancing trauma-informed care, and continuing to empower youth and adults alike to prevent harm before it starts.
