Artist Profile: Danika Rowe
As Fall for the Arts transforms Downtown Columbus into a celebration of creativity on Saturday, September 19, visitors will have the opportunity to experience the vibrant work of Nebraska artist Danika Rowe.
Known for her dynamic use of color and distinctive approach to alcohol inks, Rowe creates artwork inspired by the beauty she sees in the natural world. Expressive landscapes, abstracted elements of nature and organic cross forms are among the recurring subjects in her work.
Growing up in the Midwest helped shape that connection.
“Growing up in the Midwest, I love the beauty found in the world around me. I am often awestruck by God’s designs in nature and aim to represent them in my work.”
Somewhere Between Realism and Abstraction
One of the fascinating qualities of Rowe's work is that it doesn't fit neatly into a single category.
Using alcohol inks in a pouring process, Rowe adds and removes ink with brushes as she works. The technique allows the colors to flow and interact organically while still giving her the control to develop recognizable forms.
The result is artwork that can feel realistic and abstract at the same time.
That balance is intentional.
For Rowe, it reflects the way each of us experiences the world differently. Two people can look at the same flower, tree or landscape and notice entirely different things. Our perspectives shape what we see.
Her artwork embraces those differences while using brilliant, saturated colors and glossy resin finishes to emphasize something we share: the richness and beauty found in life.
Adding Another Dimension
Rowe continues to experiment with the possibilities of her art.
More recently, she has begun incorporating etched metal and collage papers into some of her pieces, creating additional texture and dimension.
The idea behind those works goes beyond the materials themselves. Smaller individual elements come together to create something richer and more interesting as a whole.
It's another invitation to look a little closer.
Texture, color, movement and dimension encourage the viewer to spend time with a piece rather than simply glance at it—and perhaps discover something different with each look.
