Meet the Musicians: SideStep Closes Out Fall for the Arts with Country, Rock & 30 Years of Fun
Let's turn back the clock to 1996.
Country line dancing is a thing. Big hair is still a thing. Nebraska summer nights are made for cruisin'. Weekends are made for street dances.
And four people get together to form a band that — although they don't know it yet — will still be playing together 30 years later.
Meet SideStep.
The four-piece country and rock band from Northeast Nebraska will have the distinction of closing out the inaugural Fall for the Arts, performing the final two hours of the festival at Barrel House.
And after 30 years of entertaining crowds, they should know a thing or two about how to finish a day with a good time.
Wait...A Butcher, a Hairstylist, an Animal Trainer and a Radiology Tech?
Would you believe a four-piece band consisting of a butcher, a hairstylist, an animal trainer and a radiology tech could sound this good?
No?
Good.
SideStep doesn't know who those people are either.
What they do know is how to entertain a crowd.
SideStep features Cory Delp on lead guitar and vocals, Ann Cattau on vocals, Randee Falter on drums, and Chris Robbins on bass and vocals.
Together, they perform a mix of modern and classic country along with plenty of classic rock favorites — the kind of music that makes it difficult to sit still and even harder not to sing along when you recognize the opening notes of a favorite song.
Three Decades on the Road
Since forming in 1996, SideStep has taken its music well beyond Northeast Nebraska, performing throughout Nebraska, South Dakota, Colorado and Iowa.
Along the way, they've also had opportunities to open for an impressive list of country performers.
SideStep has shared bills with artists including Joe Nichols, John Michael Montgomery, Tracy Byrd, Neal McCoy, Sawyer Brown, Joe Diffie, Clay Walker, Gary Allan, Tracy Lawrence, Terri Clark, Little Texas, Sara Evans, Montgomery Gentry, Jo Dee Messina, Toby Keith, Martina McBride, Eric Church and Florida Georgia Line, among others.
But after all those years, miles and performances, something remarkably simple still seems to be at the heart of SideStep.
They love to entertain, and they love having fun with the people who come out to see them.
That sounds like exactly what we need to finish Fall for the Arts.
One More Stop Before the Day Is Over
Fall for the Arts begins at 11 a.m., with artists, musicians and performers filling businesses and public spaces throughout downtown Columbus.
Five hours later, we aren't quite ready to send you home.
Instead, we're inviting you to make one more stop.
Head to Barrel House, grab a seat — or maybe find a little room to dance — and help us close out the first Fall for the Arts with SideStep.
After all, a band that has kept people entertained for 30 years seems like a pretty good choice to bring our first festival to the finish line.
