Permanent Lighting Brings New Life to Frankfort Square in Downtown Columbus

Last Updated 6/29/2026

A Vision Comes to Light

After years of planning and saving, a new chapter has begun for Frankfort Square in Downtown Columbus. The Downtown Business Improvement District's permanent lighting project is now complete, bringing a vibrant new feature to one of the community's favorite gathering places.

Powered by Community Partnerships

The project was made possible through a collaborative partnership between the Downtown Business Improvement District, the City of Columbus, Commonwealth Electric and a generous anonymous donor. The Downtown Business Improvement District carefully set aside assessment funding over the last three years to make this long-awaited improvement a reality.

More Than Beautiful Lighting

The new lighting system transform Frankfort Square into an even more welcoming destination after sunset while creating new opportunities for community events and celebrations throughout the year. Equipped with customizable, color-changing LED technology, the lights can be programmed to recognize holidays, civic celebrations, special events, awareness campaign and community milestones. The inaugural display features patriotic red, while and blue in celebration of America's 250th anniversary.

Beyond enhancing the beauty of the park, the permanent lighting system provides added flexibility for hosting concerts, festivals, ceremonies and other community gatherings. The improved lighting creates a more inviting atmosphere for residents and visitors while further establishing Frankfort Square as the heart of the Trackside District -- Downtown Columbus.

"This project has been several years in the making," said Downtown Business Improvement District representatives. "It represents an investment not only in the appearance of our downtown but in creating a vibrant public space where people can gather, celebrate and enjoy community events throughout the year."

Special recognition is extended to Commonwealth Electric and the anonymous donor whose generous support helped bring the project to completion. Their partnership, combined with the commitment of the Downtown Business Improvement District and the City of Columbus, demonstrates what can be accomplished when organizations work together to invest in the future of the community.

Present to celebrate the completion of the project were Downtown Business Improvement District Board members Barb Duffy, Nicole Lindhorst, Cory Reeder and Mel Jensen.

Lighting the Future of Downtown

Community members are encouraged to stop by Frankfort Square after dark to experience the new lighting display firsthand. As the seasons change, visitors can look forward to seeing the square illuminated in a variety of colors reflecting holidays, community celebrations and special occasions throughout the year.

The completion of the permanent lighting project is another step forward in the continue revitalization of Downtown Columbus, helping create a welcoming, vibrant destination for residents and visitors alike.
